The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine achieved another successful 鈥淢atch Day鈥 this year, filling 59 slots with new resident physicians and 14 fellows who will start their medical training across East Texas on July 1.
鈥淎t the School of Medicine, our commitment to community is at the heart of everything we do,鈥 said Dr. Brigham C. Willis, School of Medicine founding dean. 鈥淢atch Day is not just a celebration of these physicians鈥 achievements, but a reaffirmation of our dedication to serving the health care needs of the community.鈥
Completing residency is a requirement to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine. Residency, the post-graduate training of those who complete medical school, typically spans three to seven years. During this time, doctors receive specialized training under the supervision of an attending physician or consultant.
After completing a residency, pursuing a fellowship offers doctors additional specialization and differentiates them from other candidates. As the final phase of medical education, a fellowship often determines where physicians will stay for the rest of their practice.
鈥淎s a region, East Texas has a growing need for skilled health care professionals,鈥 said Dr. Emmanuel Elueze, 黑料专区 Tyler School of Medicine associate dean for graduate medical education and professional development. 鈥淢atch Day and the addition of these 73 new residents and fellows represent a significant milestone in our efforts to address this need by attracting and retaining top-tier medical talent. By July, we will have a total of 206 residents and fellows in training.鈥
The school also matched for the first time in three fellowship programs: hematology
and oncology, nephrology and pulmonary critical care. The school also will welcome
an inaugural class to the anesthesiology residency.
